We’re Moving

After weeks of waiting to make it blog official, I can finally tell you – we’re moving! It’s hard to make that statement exclamatory, because although we’re excited to be custom building a house, we haven’t been just dying to leave this one, either.

I know I’m going to be emotional when we hand over the keys in a few weeks. This was our first house. It’s the home that has seen our family grow from three to six – the only home my daughters have ever known, and the only one my son remembers.

Many memories reside within these walls – cherished moments we’ll never get back. I have loved living here, and still do, and yet I know it’s time to move along.

The kids are excited, too. They like the idea of making a house look just how we want it – and of having a little more space in their corner of the world.

The coming weeks will see us moving into a rental home, finalizing design decisions for the new home, and watching construction begin. It seems like one of those things that ought to feel surreal, but it doesn’t… yet. Right now it just feels real and right.

Have you ever sold a house or built a new one? What advice can you share? We’re learning as we go!

  1. We sold our first house 7 years ago, left the big city and moved to small town Iowa. We wanted smaller schools, and even though I know we made the right decision, I remember it being completely and utterly terrifying. Our house sold in THREE DAYS and we had to move into a rental quickly. It was chaos!

Moving to a different community adds another whole dimension to the stress of moving, that’s for sure! Fortunately, we are just moving across town; but even just thinking about simple things like making address changes has me a little nervous! :-)

We love walking through houses and modular homes. As we go through we ask what do I like about this house, what don’t I like, what would work for our family, what wouldn’t! Then thinking about our current house we discovered our kids don’t like a 2 story home. But they also need a larger open play space for winter time. So a ranch stlye or even a 1 1/2 story with a large open basement would be perfect! Hope you will be posting pictures! Congratulations!

Thank you! Yes, I will be posting pictures along the way! Ranch and 1 1/2 story homes definitely have great appeal because of their larger basements. Walking through some almost swayed me that way, but in the end the two-story won out for us.

  3. Congratulations, Angela! Very excited for you! And yes, it will be emotional leaving for all of you but stressing the excitement with your kids will help them—lots of reassurance that they will indeed be able to bring their favorite things. 😉 Best wishes!

Thank you, Elaine! I do think the kids were a little apprehensive at first, especially when I began packing up a lot of their excess toys and clothes. But the further along the process we get, the more they seem to be understanding what’s happening. And, of course, they are excited at the thought of having new, bigger bedrooms to “help” decorate!
